THE ART OF RESEARCH - THE PRODUCTIVE POTENTIAL OF CIRCUITOUS CONVERSATION AS A METHOD OF RESEARCH

Future Reflections embodies divergent art practices, skills and sensibilities. Overarching all these differences, however, is a commitment to addressing the group’s shared interest in art as research while exploring specific issues related to each member’s PhD. The tension between these interests creates ‘a third space,’ which includes and goes beyond each member’s individual project and practice - a space that reflects and refracts the collaborative/individual generation of research/art practice through a method of researching without a predetermined outcome.
Future Reflections is currently developing a project for The Art of Research conference.1 Comprised of surveys, questionnaires and interviews gathered at the conference, this project will use data to playfully interrogate key perceptions about art and research. Using these responses as data for discussion, analysis and as art objects in their own right, this project will explore research as practice and practice as research through a site-specific intervention.
For Detours/Desvios III, Future Reflections proposes another relational project aimed at destabilising the site/identity of the artwork/practitioner. Working with the event’s theme of ‘detours,’ Future Reflections will investigate the productive potential of circuitous conversation as a method of research.
The practice and expression of ‘the response’ will be emphasized in particular. By encouraging, documenting, and representing various kinds of participant response, Future Reflections will map this ‘third space’ at Detours/Desvios III, a space defined by the tension between the perspectives of individual respondents and the ethos overarching the conference as a whole. 1 The Art of Research will be held at the University of Art and Design Helsinki in October 2007.

Future Reflections is a collaborative research group comprised of four student researchers: Marsha Bradfield (CA), Katrine Hjelde (NO), Catherine Maffioletti (UK), and Aaron McPeake (UK), who is regrettably unable to attend Detours III. Based at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, the group formed in the spring of 2007 to facilitate a conference, publication and exhibition by the same name. Building on this initial investigation into alternative models of art as research, the Future Reflections Research Group continues to explore the theory and practice of research through art and design.

A ARTE DA PESQUISA – O POTENCIAL PRODUTIVO DA CONVERSAÇÃO CIRCULAR COMO MÉTODO DE INVESTIGAÇÃO

Future Reflections incorpora práticas artísticas, competências e sensibilidades divergentes. No entanto, acima de todas essas diferenças, há um compromisso no sentido de abordar o interesse partilhado pelo grupo na arte como pesquisa, e ao mesmo tempo explorar questões específicas relacionadas com o Doutoramento de cada membro. A tensão entre estes interesses cria um “terceiro espaço”, que inclui e ultrapassa o projecto e prática individuais de cada um dos membros – um espaço que reflecte e refracta a produção colectiva/individual de uma prática de arte/investigação através de um método de pesquisa que dispensa um resultado pré-determinado.
Future Reflections encontra-se no presente a desenvolver um projecto para a Conferência The Art of Research.1 Composto por levantamentos, questionários e entrevistas reunidas durante a conferência, este projecto usará dados recolhidos para interrogar, de forma brincalhona percepções cruciais acerca da arte e da investigação. Usando estas respostas como dados para discussão, análise e objectos de arte por direito próprio, este projecto explorará a investigação como prática e a prática como investigação, através de uma intervenção site-specific.
Para Detours/Desvios III, Future Reflections propõem um outro projecto relacional destinado a desestabilizar a identidade/lugar do criador/obra de arte. Trabalhando a partir da ideia de ‘desvio’ do evento, os Future Reflections irão investigar o potencial criativo da conversa circular enquanto método de investigação.
A prática e a expressão da ‘resposta’ serão particularmente enfatizadas. Ao encorajar, documentar e representar vários tipos de reacção dos participantes, os Future Reflections irão mapear este ‘terceiro espaço’ durante os Desvios III, um espaço definido pela tensão entre a perspectiva individual dos participantes e o carácter específico que abarca a conferência enquanto um todo. 1 The Art of Research terá lugar na University of Art and Design Helsinki em Outubro de 2007.

Future Reflections é um colectivo de investigação colaborativa composto por quatro estudantes de doutoramento, Marsha Bradfield (CA), Katrine Hjelde (NO), Catherine Maffioletti (UK), e Aaron McPeake (UK) que infelizmente não pôde estar presente nos Desvios III. Sediado no Chelsea College of Art and Design em Londres, o grupo formou-se na Primavera de 2007, de forma a produzir a conferência, publicação e exposição com o mesmo nome. Crescendo a partir desta investigação inicial sobre modelos alternativos de arte enquanto investigação, os Future Reflections continuam a explorar a teoria e a prática da investigação através da arte e do design.
