During the process it brings together interventions that use contexts of production, time and space from other projects, trying to be in a constant production of intermediate results.
The presentation of the public through actions with a participatory character where the observer is invited to engage with the work has been an area of particular interest to me. First, because of the direct relation space it opens, which confuses the protagonists, the time of creation and reception and also the degrees of performativity. Second, because it dilutes the boundaries between “same” and “different”, between “real” and “fiction”, between presentation and representation, in a permanent dialogue between life and art. The Duchamp’s notion of “infrathin”, the idea of the public as multiple and diverse and the translation of codes in processes, constitute bases of work that I would like to develop further. Some aspects of “Public Presentation” will be tested within the Working Groups for DETOURS III.

Cristiana Rocha was born in Matosinhos, 1974. If contemporary art practices can rely on a conversation methodology, is it possible to consider the moment of «encounter» as a criterion to judge and analyze them? If so, in what way? What kind of parameters could be used to reckon or guesstimate the effectiveness of the «encounter»? Furthermore, does this possibility means that the new criteria of artistic judgment are performative on their own; do they change in face of a specific «encounter»? How is it possible to sustain an artistic discourse when the product of an artwork almost does not exist or exists only as a “track”, a “stimulus” or an “impalpable inscription”? Should I deduce that the action developed, as well as the object produced, are still relevant or do they exist as pretexts to shape the moment of «encounter» in itself? Does Art still maintains roots/relations with modus operandi and form, when at the end of the day «new relational practices» seem to be willing to deconstruct any connection to methodologies, forms or traditional disciplines? It seams to me that «relational practices» feel horror before consumable final objects and before traditional art history when, in fact, they can not renounce to them. How, then to consider and critically engage results from these discursive practices when they require interpretative codes stemming from a previous formal practice? What is more interesting, however, is when art, without diminishing its mobility, seeks to engage with the real without expanding its empire; suggesting in effect that there is no need to expand its field to assert itself as art – and indeed that there may be some cases where it must deliberately foreground its own absence. With its often deliberately impaired coefficient of artistic visibility, Jochen Gerz’s 2-3 Streets project comes to mind in this respect, bringing together the artist’s insistence of the past several years on public authorship, and reflecting a shift beyond spectatorship... 2-3 Streets is a proposed exhibition, showing 2-3 streets without any noteworthy sites or occurrences, streets that could be found in any number of places. Though these happen to be in the formerly industrial area of the Ruhr Valley in Germany, they are typical of postwar cities with apartment buildings, stores, garages – nothing much worth mentioning or noticing. Indeed the criteria of their selection are at once their normalcy, and the fact that they are part of a neighborhood undergoing refurbishment, regeneration, rehabilitation or rededication. The “intervention,” as artists say, could not be greater: the streets and everything that is part of them is exhibited. Everything that happens, intentionally or by chance, changes into something worthy of artistic scrutiny. Yet the intervention could not be more infinitesimal inasmuch as there is no intervention to speak of at all. Jochen Gerz himself has described the project as “a minimal modification within sameness, which can only be registered by a contemporary consciousness.” 2-3 Streets is not a product of “creativity”: what is new was already there, what is old is still there. It is a product of redundancy – and the change could not be more profound. It is art, of course, though there is basically no need to make such a claim any more – if indeed it is a claim – except that the dialectical relationship between art and its other has by no means become redundant. Art used to dream of becoming non art. Now it appears to have opted for a more caustic form of calculated redundancy – the very opposite of colonial field-expansion.

Stephen Wright is a Paris-based art writer and research fellow at the Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art (Paris).

This “institutional critique”, launched amongst groups of militant critics and conceptual artists, often integrating counterculture movements, has been taken as motive for the creation of an “alternative” spatiality – located in urban interstices, old degraded town centres or forgotten fringes of big cities. In this “alternative” spatiality, artistic creation has been, tentatively, brought closer to its own public reception and reflection.
“Recycling” existing structures – old schools, disused military quarters, abandoned factories and warehouses – these informal “institutions” gained particular dynamics, as they socially and culturally rehabilitate local communities, often leading to the re-encounter of their lost collective memory or of the identity of the place. These “relational spaces” have tended to promote more open environments and to develop cultural and artistic programming more sensitive to the contact between the artists, and their works, and the inhabitants/visitors, making them often active participants in the creative process itself. Some of these spaces survived the following decades, some didn’t.
Currently, big contemporary art museums and centres have transformed themselves in corporate, globalised and self-referential institutions, promoting their “franchising” in a disaffected manner with regards to local geographies and cultures. What rises from here is, again, in many aspects a “revivalist” inclination to recreate relational spaces and aesthetics, more or less spontaneously framed.
Using concrete examples, with reference to their divergences and continuities, their successes and failures, from Queens to S.Paulo, from Paris to Marseille, all the way to Porto, this presentation tries to unveil what unites these two moments of relation.

Nuno Grande was born in 1966.

Geography and the other “sciences of the territory” have had in the past very clear ideas about this, ideas which were shared by areas of knowledge such as anthropology and behavioural sciences. Today, it is enough to conjure up Marc Augè’s concept of “non-place” or the contemporary geographers’ concept of “relational territories/spaces”, to begin to understand how far positions diverge. In fact, when the processes of “territorialisation” of society change, we understand how far that divergence can go: the territory’s stability (in time and space) cannot be estranged from a society characterised by all that changes: the fluidity of physical mobility, the sense of multiple belonging of individuals to different spheres of organisation and representation in society, the cross-over of cultural references and life styles, individuation, instability and globalisation of ways of production, distribution and consumption of goods and services, the informational society’s features, etc.; all this converges to the feeling that all that is unstable, mobile and perishable, constantly increases… that one easily exchanges a fixed point of view for mobile geometry of a relation which is constantly referenced to systems of more or less fixed points. Sociologists and political scientists use the same concept of “centrifugal society” to emphasise the loss of stability of many “fixed” structures that organise societies, practices and social representations.
What can we say today about a “place” such as a service station in a high-way? Will it be so different in Minho, Algarve or Los Angeles? The service station is one of the many so-called “non-places” that anthropologists talk about. It is something that lacks those relations that characterise the “thickness” of society’s territorialisation relationships; places where the “spirit of place” (Genius Loci) lives, full of sense, practices or significations of the everyday or of the profoundest transcendence. The service station is a, eminently, “relacional” place. It derives from movement; it lives of movement; it is more a situation than a site. Concerning sociability(ies), it is a disposable, ephemeral, instantaneous, almost immaterial place. In Rem Koolhaas’ language it is a true “generic”, an architecture that replicates itself to infinity and that always replicates the same codes, spacialities, functions, signage, that always adapts to uses and practices which are relatively restricted, hyper-codified, judged by criteria of pure funcionality. It is a confined territory that inhabits a suspension in time and space. Many say the same thing about airports and shopping malls, reinforcing the disenchantment, the bad mourning for the loss of the traditional notion of place as an idea of stability, rooting and identity; a suspicion in the face of the demons of consumerism, massification, loss of consistency of the collective sense reduced to variable sums of individuals and individualisations. It is clear where this line of argument is going.
On the other extreme are the “historical centre” and the “traditional village”. Displaced from the social context and from the geography and temporality which produced them, these other places are increasingly “objectified” as perennial redoubts for lost identities. They present themselves, both loaded with symbols, memories and significations, and, at the same time, they are quickly reduced to mere sets and simulacra, some kind of theme parks so “true/real” or “false” as the experiences they induce. The traumas of loosing the “city” or the “countryside” spur their “preservation”, patrimonial status acquisition, recuperation, etc., but also their festival-like acquired condition, their character of (un)common place. They may even become heterotopias, true functional and symbolic “service station areas” intercepted by the everyday flow and by the constant zapping through more or less fixed places visited by more or less hypermobile people.
This is the schizophrenia that may address us when the artistic gesture locates itself in place and identity, trying to fixate ou address that realtion that is eminently public in the space and in the way it is organized.
When today we question the sense of evolution of what is designated as globalisation, cosmopolitanism, inter-culturalism, etc., it is crucial to try and find sense for other implicit questions such as localism, exclusion, etc.. It is important to avoid polarisations that tend to focus overtly on identities (either by too much or too little consideration) and try instead to seek for correlations and crossings that connections always enable and reveal.

Álvaro Domingues, geographer and Professor at the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto, he teaches “Geografia do Território e Formas Urbanas” (Geography, Territory and Urban Forms).

Many artists investigate processes of interchange (based or not on commercial interchange) as an end to their artistic production, more than they invest solely in an object oriented practice. Conversations and, in general, any kind of social interchange are considered to be relevant artistic methodologies, as well as engaging others in the artistic experience. But these processes have not necessarily been fully evaluated in terms of their aesthetic repercussions; neither have their social implications have been entirely demystified.
It is therefore necessary to instigate a debate on this territory, attempting, on the one hand, to unveil the pitfalls of excessive welldoing expectations attributed to socially engaging art practices, at the same time that, on the other hand, the scope of the so called “relational aesthetics” and its importance for today’s artists needs to be investigated.

Gabriela Vaz-Pinheiro holds a Sculpture Degree from the Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto; European Scenography Master of Arts from Central Saint Martin’s College; Theory and Practice of Public Art & Design Master of Arts from Chelsea College of Art & Design.

Gabriela Vaz-Pinheiro é Licenciada em Escultura pela Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto; European Scenography Master of Arts pelo Central Saint Martin’s College; Mestrado em Theory and Practice of Public Art & Design pelo Chelsea College of Art & Design; e Doutoramento por Projecto com o Chelsea College, com a tese: Art from Place: the expression of cultural memory in the urban environment and in place-specific art interventions. It was presented in Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Annex, a 40x40-foot room with domed Tiffany ceiling, which commemorates the bloodiest battles of the U.S. Civil War. Media for the installation included forty WWII wool army blankets with photographs of the body printed on cotton and mechanical breathing apparatuses. The darkened adjacent room featured projected video, sound and text, two 25-foot buckthorn trees, roots intact, and performers peeling the bark from the trees. Projections written by ecologist Liam Heneghan in an essay about invasive plant species, questioned how we as a species engage protection and invasion: “Simply stating the words fear and violence and loss and dread and shame and mourning and confusion and passivity and tenderness and vulnerability seem wholly inadequate to describe how we feel standing in GAR Hall …Monuments are in memory of bravery, and untoward and unwanted death and destruction that surround us this Autumn 2004. We are sure to see more to come. We aim to begin our conversation where this Civil War memorial site leaves off.”
Heads or Tails, Chicago Cultural Center 2005, a site-specific installation at Preston Bradley Hall, the Chicago Cultural Center, originally the Circulation Reading Room for the Chicago Public Library, the hall’s walls and ceiling bear the names of great (primarily Western) writers on its decorated arches, alongside inscriptions in ten languages extolling the wisdom found in books. The loss and failure of words, and the loss of this public reading room, this space for contemplation, now usually a rented performance space, was at the heart of this project. It included large format photographs of polyurethane cast heads, video projection, live music and two performers who searched for safety in the form of a safety pin on orange mason line strung across the installation space. Heads or Tails incorporated images and text from a found diary and log discovered in a used bookstore in Estonia.
Coming and Going, Uptown neighbourhood, Chicago 2006, Artistic Directors: Dolores Wilber and B.J. Krivanek/Community Architexts. Located in a commuter parking lot at Truman College in Uptown, Chicago, this site-specific performance appropriated the parking lot and dynamic backdrop of elevated train traffic (active and inactive Chicago Transit Authority structures) deploying actors, a 20+-person choral ensemble (performing Bach, Morten Lauridsen, and Ernani Agular), digital video and text/ image projections, cars and a moving van. Incorporating the Samuel Beckett short play Come and Go (1965), this work activated particular issues and themes—transience, displacement, instability, desertion, factionalization and fear—that resonate for the various communities that co-exist uneasily within the rapidly gentrifying Uptown community. Uptown was historically a Jewish immigrant community, evolving into a port of entry for migrating workers from the southern United States, and then immigrants from every country in the world.

Dolores Wilber is an artist and performer, founder and director of the live art collaborative, Wholesale Chicago.
Coming and Going, Subúrbios de Chicago, 2006, Directores Artísticos: Dolores Wilber e B.J. Krivanek/Community Architexts.

Instead of the old paradigm of centre and periphery, we face a socio-cultural structure more akin to a maze of mirrors whereby formerly incompatible social and economic structures now cooperate and reflect each other, creating alliances in order to achieve goals which are strategic and transient themselves.
What was previously stated, largely explains the recent emergence of a series of peculiar ways of unauthorized public interventions which question former notions of vandalism and unlawfulness. Two prime examples of this are the practices of "reverse graffiti" and "guerilla gardening". Although technically illegal, both are fuelled by social and environmental concerns, and exploit legal loops and voids in order to flourish.
Even though the legal aspects of such phenomena are worthy of consideration, the operative and symbolic dimensions of "fair vandalism" are becoming the most striking ones. Amongst a generation that often sees no distinction between work, leisure and activism, and often ignores the potential conflict between corporate interest and social involvement, “fair vandalism” is ready for use as viral marketing, just as it exposes the immense potential for contradiction between the formal and ethical dimensions of social ruling. In other words, the time has come when it is possible to be arrested for the act of cleaning walls, just as the time has come when the act of cleaning an over-saturated public space may foster the loudest voice of them all.

Heitor Alvelos is Doctor of Philosophy (Communication Art and Design, Royal College of Art, 2003) and Master of Fine Arts (Visual Communication, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, 1992).

Heitor Alvelos é Doutorado em Comunicação, Arte e Design pelo Royal College of Art (Londres, 2003) e Mestre em Comunicação Visual pela School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1992). In several projects I tried to stress out the relationship between the art object and its public. In the poster project 3500 cm2 was the stronger relation of an inverse process of public art. The title 3500cm2 refers to the surface area of a 50x70cm poster. Around 70 international artists exhibited their work in this size and format; it was then given for free to a large public, often not from the art world. Sonicity was a project that combined music, architecture and art in a particular urban situation. Furthermore, some key formulations (difference, deterritorialisation, becoming) are loosely related to the work of the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze. In this respect, particularly relevant source is his book “Proust and Signs”.
Practice of difference is NOT a violent re-assertion of incompatible and incommensurable identities in a state of collision with each other. On the contrary, practice of difference is a dynamic process of diversification that, instead of proceeding from identity, is constantly and inconclusively moving away and toward it without ever reaching the point of stability. Difference is, in other words, not a result of multiplied identities because it is, in ontological terms, “coming before” it. So, if diversity, in a globalized world is to supplement sameness as a traditional constitutive element of culture, ontology of identity which rule western thought for thousands of years need to be re-shaped into an ontology of difference. This can be done only through the persistent practice of deterritorialisation that implies strategies such as systematic destabilisation of identities and continuous motion of cultural, political and personal in-between-ness. The uncertain movement of Be-coming (difference) needs to keep anticipating static sovereignty of Being (identity) without ever reaching it. As such, the ongoing movement of be-coming is the real source of existential, social and cultural creativity, and that’s where we are arriving at the concept of art. Artistic process and practice of difference are essentially related. Both in their working procedures and outcomes, artists depend on an ongoing attempt to deterritorialise themselves.
Contrary to the conventional belief, “good art” (to a degree in which it is different from the pure demonstration of skill - artistry) is not an expression of the fixed identity, however excellent or fulfilling this identity seems to be. Art is an active exercise of difference. If it is telling us anything at all, the artistic gesture should be interpreted as a fleeting expression of an imaginative flight beyond fixed territory, identity and meaning. Furthermore, while being a testimony-relic-trace of deterritorialisation attempted by the artist himself, art work is also an active attempt to trigger a motion of in-between-ness in us, as observers, to destabilise our artificial certainties and set us on the journey of be-coming something/somebody else than who we think we are. In other words, by being creative, artists try to make us creative as well. If we assume that the practice (and ontology) of difference is the proper conceptual instrument necessary to transform the proliferation of diversities into a positive cultural force, and if we acknowledge that artistic activity, both in its procedures and its outcomes, is based on this ontology, then we can conclude that ethical value of cultural diversity and the aesthetical value of arts are overlapping at this point of ontological convergence. Social engagement (ethics) of art is related to its quality to a degree to which this quality can be articulated as a practice of difference.

Igor Dobricic studied dramaturgy at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade, (former) Yugoslavia, left the home country at the beginning of the Balkan wars and lived and worked for three years in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, Australia, then returned to Belgrade and became dramaturge for the Belgrade International Theatre Festival (BITEF). In 1995, over a period of four years, he embarked on an experimental performance work with a group of teenagers, systematically exploring the parameters of performative action in-between the different fixed contexts (theatre and visual arts, professional and non-professional status, individual and group work, aesthetics and ethics, etc). During 1998 he was a grantee in an art project funded by the European Cultural Foundation (www.eurocult.org). In the summer of 1999 he became coordinator of the Arts Programme at the European Cultural Foundation and moved to Holland. Admitted to the postgraduate course at the De Amsterdamse School for Advanced Research in Theatre and Dance Studies (DasArts) (www.dasarts.nl), during which he created a number of installations and solo performances. In May 2004, along with a group of artists he established the TIME Foundation, a platform for international interdisciplinary artistic collaboration focusing on forging links with those regions that are, mostly because of their political status, excluded from the ongoing processes of exchange. Throughout 2005 he developed a new project platform for the European Cultural Foundation (ALMOSTREAL) and collaborated as a dramaturge with a number of choreographers, such as Nicole Beutler, Keren Levi, Nora Heillman, Diego Gil, Katrina Brown, among others.

Overarching all these differences, however, is a commitment to addressing the group’s shared interest in art as research while exploring specific issues related to each member’s PhD. The tension between these interests creates ‘a third space,’ which includes and goes beyond each member’s individual project and practice - a space that reflects and refracts the collaborative/individual generation of research/art practice through a method of researching without a predetermined outcome.
Future Reflections is currently developing a project for The Art of Research conference.1 Comprised of surveys, questionnaires and interviews gathered at the conference, this project will use data to playfully interrogate key perceptions about art and research. Using these responses as data for discussion, analysis and as art objects in their own right, this project will explore research as practice and practice as research through a site-specific intervention.
For Detours/Desvios III, Future Reflections proposes another relational project aimed at destabilising the site/identity of the artwork/practitioner. Working with the event’s theme of ‘detours,’ Future Reflections will investigate the productive potential of circuitous conversation as a method of research.
The practice and expression of ‘the response’ will be emphasized in particular. By encouraging, documenting, and representing various kinds of participant response, Future Reflections will map this ‘third space’ at Detours/Desvios III, a space defined by the tension between the perspectives of individual respondents and the ethos overarching the conference as a whole. 1 The Art of Research will be held at the University of Art and Design Helsinki in October 2007.

Future Reflections is a collaborative research group comprised of four student researchers: Marsha Bradfield (CA), Katrine Hjelde (NO), Catherine Maffioletti (UK), and Aaron McPeake (UK), who is regrettably unable to attend Detours III. Based at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, the group formed in the spring of 2007 to facilitate a conference, publication and exhibition by the same name.
1 The Art of Research terá lugar na University of Art and Design Helsinki em Outubro de 2007.

The 60s international issues, from Eco to Beuys, finally started to become real. And among many art slogans whispered in our minds or shouted around the streets, something new came to stage - besides the artist, struggling to turn ideas and objects possible, the public had a role to play. In order to involve it into artistic practices, experiments were made, opening spaces of art making, galleries, meetings, collective works with non artists and artists, like Puzzle and Acre Group.
As an art student working to find out my own artistic identity, I also wished to try new projects together with other young women. That group collapsed soon, but the idea of working together still goes on interesting me, not only as an artist, but also as a scholar. From a few years up to now, artistic group productions revealing different sorts of collaboration are getting a more relevant space in international art events such as Kassel, Venice and the Seville BIACS. Frequently, people from other activities, traditionally non-artistic ones, are equal members in collectives. Many examples may be called: names such as the painters Komar & Melamid, the Normal Group, Muntean & Rosenblum; artists as the seventies Group Cronica and the recent El Perro from Spain; or as Riera/ Petrescu, Dias & Riedveg, Gusmão e Paiva; or larger collectives such as the Atlas Group, Park Fiction, Retort, Xiamen Dada, La Source du Lion, Huit Facettes, Reporting System, among many others.
My aim in this communication is to focus on some of these artist’s collectives and their relational practices, manifestos, and most relevant issues. Some questions may be put in advance:
Why do some artists prefer to work together, and how do they reconfigure or dissolve each artistic personal identity into a sort of collective authorship? How are these groups organized, how do they work, what methodologies they use? How far is place an outstanding feature? And, besides more obvious political frames, what issues may we find?

Isabel Sabino was born in Lisbon, 1955.

Many artists investigate processes of interchange (based or not on commercial interchange) as an ends to their artistic production, more than they invest solely in an object oriented practice. Conversations and, in general, any kind of social currency are considered to be relevant artistic methodologies, as well as engaging others in the artistic experience. But these processes have not necessarily been fully evaluated in terms of their aesthetics repercussions, neither have their social implications have been entirely demystified.
It is therefore necessary to instigate a debate on this territory, attempting, on the one hand, to unveil the pitfalls of excessive welldoing expectations put on socially engaging art practices, at the same time that, on the other hand, the scope of the so called “relational aesthetics” and its importance for artists today needs to be investigated.

The coming event proposes a different format for a conference by creating separate sets of interchange and discussion that later come together in the forum.

The line up of speakers comprises some of most interesting and thought-provoking voices at the moment:
Álvaro Domingues (Geographer and Researcher, PT)
Carla Cruz (Artist and Researcher, PT)
Cristiana Rocha (Artist, PT)
Dolores Wilber (Artist and Performer, USA)
Francesca Ferguson (Architect and Curator, UK)
Future Reflections: Catherine Maffioletti (UK), Katrine Hjelde (NO), Marsha Bradfield (UK) (Research collaboration based at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London)
Heitor Alvelos (Designer and Researcher, PT)
Igor Dobricic (Dramaturge, CS)
Isabel Sabino (Artist and Researcher, PT)
Lorenzo Benedetti (Curator, IT)
Nuno Grande (Architect and Researcher, PT)
Sara Matos (Artist, PT)
Stephen Wright (Researcher, UK).

The structure of the event will thus consider two different types of moments: a line up of 30 minutes presentations on the 19th and the morning of the 20th from the invited and submitting speakers, both followed by a forum with the audience; and four working groups in the afternoon of the 20th chaired by a pair of speakers and invited participants.

The working groups will share their findings and experience in a final discussion at the end of the day.

Carla Cruz (Artista e Investigadora, PT)
Carlos Bloss (Curador, ES)
Cristiana Rocha (Artista, PT)
Dolores Wilber (Artista e Performer, USA)
Francesca Ferguson (Arquitecto e Curador, UK)
Future Reflections: Catherine Maffioletti (UK), Katrine Hjelde (NO), Marsha Bradfield (UK) (Equipa de investigação colaborativa sedeada no Chelsea College of Art & Design em Londres)
Heitor Alvelos (Designer e Investigador, PT)
Igor Dobricic (Dramaturgo, CS)
Isabel Sabino (Artista e Investigador, PT)
Lorenzo Benedetti (Curador, IT)
Nuno Grande (Arquitecto e Investigador, PT)
Sara Matos (Artista, PT)
Stephen Wright (Investigador, UK).
